“Jasper, do you have a death wish?” Jarrod’s tone was laced with danger as he flicked on his turn signal, fully preparing to pull over.<\/p>\n
That finally managed to scare the boy. Jasper threw his hands up in surrender. “Okay, my bad! I’ll shut up.”<\/p>\n
But the moment he apologized, he couldn’t resist poking the bear one last time.<\/p>\n
“They say people get defensive about the things they’re most insecure about\u2014but obviously, that’s not you, Jarrod! You’re young, strong, and in peak physical condition!”<\/p>\n
Stella let out a snort of laughter, completely derailed by Jasper’s commentary.<\/p>\n
Jarrod brought the car to a halt and shot her a warning glance. “You disagree?”<\/p>\n
The tips of Stella’s ears burned red. She wouldn’t dare disagree. Jarrod was undeniably exceptional in that particular department; he left her completely exhausted every time.<\/p>\n
Still, it wasn’t exactly an appropriate conversation to have in front of Jasper.<\/p>\n
She was just trying to come up with a subject change when Jarrod’s phone suddenly rang.<\/p>\n
It was a local number.<\/p>\n
Jarrod tapped the steering wheel controls to answer it via Bluetooth.<\/p>\n
A tearful female voice echoed through the speakers. “Mr. Fuller! It’s Fiona Gable, Director Huxley’s assistant. I was just accompanying her to meet a client, and she suddenly collapsed! I’ve called an ambulance. Can you please come to the hospital?”<\/p>\n
Jarrod frowned, his response immediate. “Send me the location. I’m on my way.”<\/p>\n
“Okay! Thank you, Mr. Fuller!” Fiona hung up, sounding immensely relieved.<\/p>\n
“Jarrod, you’re going to the hospital? Didn’t you say you’d take me to get food and buy gifts?” Jasper asked, visibly annoyed.<\/p>\n
“Have Stella take you.”<\/p>\n
Jarrod pulled a black card from the center console and handed it to Stella. “If you see anything you like, buy it for yourself as well.”<\/p>\n
Stella knew exactly what her own bank account looked like. She didn’t try to act prideful and quietly took the card.<\/p>\n
“No way! You promised to hang out with us! You can’t just ditch us!”<\/p>\n
Jasper was used to being spoiled, and he wasn’t nearly as accommodating as Stella. “Does she not have her own family or friends?
