But whatever he was going to say got stuck somewhere deep inside him, trapped and unsaid.

He had changed so much over the years. Quiet. Withdrawn. Like someone trying to shrink from the world.

Hannah didn’t push for an answer. She took a step closer, her laugh low and empty, not really directed at anyone. “Is it because you can’t forget her? You go out of your way to avoid me, hiding out here, clinging to memories… is that it?”

Lawrence’s breath grew heavier. When my mom took Jasper back home, did you ever bother to video call, even once?”

Lawrence didn’t say a word, standing there like a statue, looking fine on the outside but hollowed out and turning to dust on the inside.

Lawrence wavered, just a little, but it was obvious. He remembered.

Of course he did.

He could never forget any of it. Every word cut him to pieces all over again.

Hannah let out a soft, aching laugh. “You remember, but after everything, you still fell for Bonnie. In all those months with her, you just kept falling deeper. When we got to the States, you were always just… gone. And now that we’re back, you’re nowhere to be found.”

She looked at him straight on, her voice low. “So, Lawrence, what now?
