Ever since that day they\u2019d split up at the plaza, Aiken would show up with food when he found a break in his schedule. He knew her stomach was sensitive, so he\u2019d go so far as to make soup himself or stew some meat. Bonnie sometimes felt awkward about it all, especially knowing how insanely busy Aiken was. Even though he barely had time to breathe, he still managed to call her, or just drop by the entrance of her apartment complex.<\/p>\n
Sometimes they didn\u2019t really do anything, just stood around talking for a few minutes. Even the security guard had gotten curious one day and asked Bonnie if she and Aiken were dating. She told him no, but deep down, she knew what Aiken felt was more than friendship. He never said it, so she just acted like she didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n
Helen was spreading out a huge, folded blueprint on the table, lining it up so Bonnie could stamp the approval box. This time, instead of getting all excited and telling Bonnie to go for a new relationship, she looked a little worried. \u201cHe does sound like a good guy from what you\u2019re telling me. Bonnie couldn\u2019t even say whether she liked Aiken or not. Sometimes it felt like she might have lost the ability to really care about this stuff. Whenever she went on arranged dates, as long as the guy didn\u2019t annoy her, she\u2019d give it a shot. If things didn\u2019t work out, it didn\u2019t bother her. She could keep spending her life on her own or let someone in, it didn\u2019t really matter. Nothing really made her feel much of anything anymore, like all her feelings had settled to the bottom and gone still.<\/p>\n
First day back after the holidays, Bonnie spotted him waiting across the crowd, barely moving among all the people rushing by. Their eyes met for a long, shaky moment, her stomach twisting and her heart skittering in her chest, before she forced herself to look away.<\/p>\n

But all that week, no matter how late she finished work, Lawrence was always there at the exit, waiting. Bonnie never gave him a glance, never said a word. He just stood there, silent, hoping she might change her mind.
