The engine thundered in his ears. In the next moment, the car surged forward, barreling toward him. The headlights were so bright, he had to shut his eyes, bracing himself for the end, ready for Bonnie to be the one to finish him.

If he died, nobody would blame her. His mom would handle everything. Maybe it was better that way. Maybe everyone could finally breathe again.

But the crash he braced for didn’t come. The Maybach veered at a sharp angle, just barely grazing him and knocking him to the ground.

He slammed into the rocky dirt. Every nerve in his body buzzed with shock and pain.

Lawrence stayed there, staring up at the endless black sky. The car stopped. Seconds or maybe minutes dragged by before the engine revved and the Maybach rolled away.

The dark sky hung heavy above, the stars and the moon watching him, mocking how wrecked he looked right now.

Then, out of nowhere, Lawrence started to laugh. A rough, broken sound, old and tired, but tangled up with something wild and electric he couldn’t contain.

He wiped his eyes, but they were wet all over again.

Bonnie hadn’t killed him.

She hadn’t just sped off without a second glance.

She was still worried about him.

***

Bonnie drove straight back to the city. She pulled over wherever and got out with her drone and her bag. That’s when she noticed Lawrence’s phone on the center console, screen glowing in the dim light.

“Hannah” was calling. The sight stung. Bonnie just stared for a second, her eyes burning. Lawrence really was crazy. Selfish… and such a coward.

He was a mess, but he wouldn’t be satisfied unless he dragged her down too.

She grabbed the phone, and as the window slid up, Bonnie tossed the keys inside and locked the car behind her before walking off.

She caught a cab home and beelined for the bathroom. Toothbrush, soap, water—she scrubbed her mouth and face over and over, not even sure how many times, until she finally raised her head to look in the mirror.

She hurried over, eyes wide. “Did you get in a fight? Seriously, at your age, you’re still…”

She couldn’t finish the thought. The closer she got, the more she could see—scratches from nails across his face and neck, his lips swollen, and in the right light, a faint handprint on his cheek.

The idea flashed through her mind. She looked at Lawrence, and he was actually smiling. His eyes, bright and alive.

Her throat tightened. He looked just like the boy who once ran home beaming about Bonnie. He’d burst through the door, breathless, “Mom, I’ve got a girlfriend! Guess who!”

It had been so long since she’d seen him smile like that—genuine, almost giddy with hope. For a moment, he didn’t look like someone just going through the motions. For a moment, he seemed real again, his soul back in his body.

She swallowed hard. “Bonnie did that to your face?”

Lawrence didn’t answer. He said quietly, “Mom, where’s Hannah?”

“Upstairs with Jasper. You haven’t been home these days. Hannah’s… well, she’s kind of upset. She snapped at Jasper earlier and is trying to calm him down now.”

Lawrence nodded, glancing up toward the stairs, not really seeing anything. He looked back at his mom, suddenly serious. “Mom, I need to talk to you about something.”

["post-775","chapter","type-chapter","status-publish","hentry
["GET
