Bonnie felt a little awkward. She hadn\u2019t been expecting Aiken. When she saw how tired he looked, she quickly stepped aside and let him in.<\/p>\n
Aiken came in wearing casual clothes, holding a box of cut fruit. He smiled as he walked past her, not catching the uncertainty in her voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cFeeling any better? You sound more energetic,\u201d Aiken said, taking in her face and finally relaxing a little.<\/p>\n
Bonnie answered honestly. Her throat was still a bit sore, but that was it. Aiken looked surprised. \u201cYour friends told me your colds usually drag on for ages, but you bounced back quickly this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
She used to take forever to recover. Mostly because she hated hospitals. Being sick always made her feel fragile and needy.<\/p>\n
But this time, she wanted so badly to keep her promise to Lawrence. Even though she hated needles, she forced herself to tough it out.<\/p>\n
Lawrence\u2019s doctor was pretty skilled, and the medicine worked fast.<\/p>\n
Bonnie kept all that to herself.<\/p>\n
Aiken glanced around for the pair of disposable slippers he had worn before. They were nowhere to be found, maybe she\u2019d thrown them out. He set the fruit on the coffee table and looked over at the trash can.<\/p>\n
Used up IV bags, tossed needles, bits of tape, and cotton balls.<\/p>\n
He\u2019d also glanced into the kitchen. There were meal containers on the counter, still out instead of put away in the fridge. Everything else in the apartment was spotless and perfectly tidy.<\/p>\n
Bonnie was still under the weather. She definitely didn\u2019t have the energy to cook or keep the place so clean.<\/p>\n
Somebody had been looking after her. And she hadn\u2019t been home.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why, after leaving work, Aiken headed straight over. And just a bit earlier, he\u2019d seen a Maybach pulling out of the underground parking garage.<\/p>\n
Aiken turned to her, lowering his eyes. Bonnie couldn\u2019t help but lower her head, too. She suddenly felt like she\u2019d been caught, like she was being questioned, even though no one had said a word.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re still doing such dangerous stuff?\u201d The words slipped out before she could stop herself.<\/p>\n
Aiken grinned, which pulled at his injury and made him wince before he could finish his joke. \u201cHey, don\u2019t stereotype us. The local police end up in risky situations, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bonnie\u2019s cheeks turned a little pink and she explained quietly, \u201cThat\u2019s not what I meant. It\u2019s just\u2026 as your friend, it\u2019s only natural to worry when I hear about something like that. Just be careful when you\u2019re on a case, alright? Don\u2019t get yourself hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n
Aiken nodded softly, meeting her eyes. For a few moments, they just looked at each other, until Bonnie, flustered, looked away.<\/p>\n
He chuckled. \u201cWanna hear the details? The case is closed. No secrets anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bonnie looked up and smiled. \u201cYeah, tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n
